NSFW: Carmen Carrera As a Work of Art

Picture
Carmen Carrera never ceases to WOW us with her stunning beauty. This month she has collaborated with David LaChapelle (a photographer known for creating shocking and thought-provoking art work) in support of the Life Ball 2014 fundraiser event. This event, which takes place in Vienna, Austria on May 31, is a charity ball that raises funding and awareness for AIDS.

The Life Ball 2014 advertisement showcases Carmen completely nude, basking in an atmosphere that is reminiscent of the Garden of Earthly Delights (which is a famous 15th-16th century painting by the artist Hieronymus Bosch). The Life Ball promotional material is displayed in two different versions: one version with female genitalia and one with male genitalia (continue through the article to view the uncensored images).

The tagline on the poster, "Ich bin Adam. Ich bin Eva. Ich bin ich," translates to "I'm Adam, I'm Eve, I'm Me." Carmen's words of wisdom and her commitment to the expression of positive body image inspire us. Carmen had this to say about the Life Ball ad:

Your gender should not matter in your heart or in the way you express your personality... We shouldn’t be afraid to stick to a model, because there are so many types of diverse people on this planet. My message is: beauty has no gender. At the end of the day beauty is beauty.
As the artist, David LaChapelle, says:
Gender lines are blurred and every person is unique in how they see themselves," David LaChapelle explains. "For me the body is more than something to be looked at as an object of sexual gratification. The body is a beautiful housing for the soul that we are celebrating in this picture.

All we have to say is: stunning, stunning, STUNNING! Carmen is a goddess to this planet, and this Life Ball ad is a perfect example of that!

The Other Drag Moms: Queens and their Moms

5/11/2014

Behind every fierce queen is an even fiercer mama! Before every queen learns about makeup, outfits, and the art of drag performance from her chosen "drag mom", she has her original mother to thank for raising her and bringing her into this world. Many of our favorite queens are mama's boys at heart!

In honor of Mother's Day, Drag Official invites you to join us in celebrating some of the most supportive, caring, and loving mothers a drag queen could ask for!

detox & her mom

Detox's mom, Patricia Sanderson, is one of the most supportive and loving moms around! This wonderful lady is constantly showing her son love and expressing how proud she is of him. Check out our interview with her from last summer to see just how caring Detox's mom is! We're still gushing over the time Detox pulled her mom on stage mid-performance to hug her. We can't get enough of these two!
Picture

we adore adore's mom!

Adore Delano often speaks about how her mom has been her backbone and support system through it all- from American Idol to Drag Race! We sure are glad that she supported Danny (Adore) all through his early teens when he would go to school in drag!

Her support has also been showcased this season in Drag Race's Untucked, where Adore's mom left a heartfelt video message, expressing her pride in her son's accomplishments.
Picture

Raven's mama

Picture

Not only has Raven's mom been on Drag U, where she expressed her pride in her son, but she has performed an on-stage lip sync duet (as her drag persona, LadyHawk!) with JuJubee for Raven's birthday! Now that's what we call a birthday present!
Picture

Trinity's mom

Trinity's mom is not only her number one fan, but also her manager! This powerhouse of a woman is also the reason why Trinity K. Bonet auditioned for season 6 of RuPaul's Drag Race in the first place! Her mom even threw her a Halloween party when she was in her early teens, so she could perform in drag. Trinity said:

"She even had other drag queens in the community come to the party and perform that night as well... I'm so grateful my mom invested in me, because now I'm here."

Let's continue to celebrate the wonderful women in our lives, through this Mother's Day and beyond! Happy Mother's Day.

Jujubee is an avid gardener.  Although space is very limited in the city, every bit of possible area is used to fill planter boxes with flowers, vegetables, and herbs.

7.
She is a proud member of the left-handers club, which only consists of only 10% of the world's population.

Although perceived as a nightclub mainstay, Juju is very content spending quiet evenings at home.

Speaking of evenings at home, she prefers to cook meals rather than eating or ordering out. The cuisine ranges from traditional Laotian to meatloaf.

4.
Juju only wears contacts while in character and often wears colored over prescription.

As a child, she had a parrot, aptly named "Parrot". Unfortunately, things didn't end well for the bird. Juju accidentally closed a door on its neck and killed it. Juju cried for 2 straight days.

Jujubee has been an avid watcher of Wheel of Fortune since she was 5 years old and often tries to yell the puzzle answers to the contestants on TV.

RuPaul's Drag Race Street Art Continues to Take Over City of Paris

4/23/2014

Picture
Ooh la la! Last week, Parisians got a surprise when RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 6 inspired street art began popping up around the City of Love. It started off slowly with just Langanja Estranja, Adore Delano, and BenDeLaCreme but has expanded to include Courtney Act and Bianca Del Rio throughout the streets this week.

Many have been asking: who is the genius behind this explosion of creative and expressive drag queen street art? The artist is Surianii, who has been uploading the street art photos to their Flickr. On many of the pieces, you can see a small ‘Surianii’ signature along the queens’ dresses and bodies.

This street art is revolutionary for drag culture. Through this public art form, drag is being shared with every person passing by on the streets (even if they don't realize it!) We can’t wait to see which queens Surianii decides to let come to life on the Paris streets next!

Check out the multitude of different looks Surianii covered for Laganja, Adore, Dela, Courtney, and Bianca:
Follow Surianii on Flickr to keep up to date with their newest Drag Race street art!

Meet the Cast: The Drag Queens of London

4/14/2014

As The Drag Queens of London April 22nd premiere date nears, it's time to learn more about the shining stars of the show: the queens themselves! Get into the know and meet the cast of The Drag Queens of London!

Lady Lloyd

Picture
Lady Lloyd's famously loud personality and brush with fame has earned her celebrity status as a loveable loose cannon within the drag world.

Lady Lloyd (27 years old) rocketed ahead in the world of drag when Vivienne Westwood chose her as a catwalk model.

Lloyd is friends with icon and king of controversy Boy George, and she just finished touring with Ke$ha, ending with shows at Shepherds Bush Empire, Earls Court Arena and Capital FM's Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium in front of 100,000 people.

Lloyd’s initial path into drag started as a night club door hostess. Lloyd is loved by The Sugbabes and named her own drag troupe ‘The Buffalo Girls’ after the girl band’s original name.

Lloyd suffered a violent homophobic attack in his hometown of Stansted which is explored in the programme. She is now living in Soho where she can be her happy-go-lucky self

Munroe Bergdorf

Picture
Transitioning transsexual and aspiring businesswoman, Munroe is the ‘It girl’ of the drag scene. Her high-end lifestyle and big dreams ensure she’s always in the spotlight.

Munroe (27 years old) has come a long way since being a drag queen on the Soho scene. Her stunning, feminine model-looks often leave people shocked to discover she’s actually a transitioning transsexual, which we explore in the series.

She’s a high-end model and one day she aims to launch her own lingerie brand and has launched her own make line with Illamasqua. She’s training to become a make-up artist.

To perfect her already feminine looks she’s currently finding new ways to raise £15k to spend on facial surgery.

Moving away from the drag scene this princess mingles with the high society of Soho.

Meth

Picture
Having studied at the prestigious Central School of
Speech and Drama, Meth has a professional, alternative show and a sharp wit that has given her a strong cult following.

Known for her controversial stage show, which includes helpings of blood and nudity, this drag queen really lets it all hang out.

Meth (25 years old) is the doyenne of Meth Lab, a night known for bringing the glamorous stars of Ru Paul’s Drag Race to London. DWV, Latrice Royale, Michelle Visage: Meth rubs shoulders with the American drag A-list.

The driving force behind Familyyy Fierce, Meth may not live with the other queens but is the pinnacle personality of the group.

Meth has honed her craft from performing in dingy venues to coming 2nd in Tranny Academy 2013. Meth is now stepping it up another level to bring a string of new club nights to the capital. The arrival of DWV to Meth Lab features in the series.

Silver Summers

Picture
Single, fun-loving and seeking fame, Silver Summers is showing no signs of slowing down at 33 and balancing partying hard.

Parallel to the hit 80s film ‘Tootsie’, for 15 years Bobby Houston (Silver Summers) unsuccessfully tried to find fame as a man in pop groups and rock bands, but discovered true success after 18 months performing as a woman.

At 33 years old and having only been on the scene for 18 months, Bobby faces the challenges of establishing a unique act, and trying to keep up with the younger queens on the party scene.

She’s a member of the notoriously wild ‘Buffalo Girls’ drag troupe with Lady Lloyd and Baga Chipz. They cause havoc wherever they go, much to Silver’s distress when she’s sober.

Out of drag, Silver lives a low-key life with his best friend and the best friend’s parents. In the series Bobby returns to Glasgow to perform in front of his family in drag for the first time.

Baga Chipz

Picture
Baga Chipz believes personality is everything, and idolizes strong working-class women featured in the 60s and 70s ‘golden age’ of Coronation Street. She bases her drag act upon this inspiration.

Outrageous Baga Chipz (23 years old) is a salt of the earth Northern drag queen that is a mixture of all things kitsch and Coronation Street.

Before starting to do drag, Leo Lauren (Baga) was raised on a rough council estate in Birmingham. Leo's admirable inner confidence was made possible by his close-knit family who encouraged him to beat the prejudice, get off benefits and relocate to London where his true colors have been celebrated.

Baga is a member of the notoriously wild ‘Buffalo Girls’ drag troupe with Lady Lloyd and Silver Summers.

Flirty by nature, Baga has no shortage of male interest and has a reputation of hooking up with a different boy every night

The Very Miss Dusty ‘O'

Picture
With over three decades of experience on the drag scene, Dusty (47 years old) is the highly respected voice of reason, and idol to most young queens.

Dusty is the well-respected Host and Co-Promoter of Trannyshack and one of the biggest drag competitions of the year; Trannyshack Academy.

The self-proclaimed ‘mother hen’ of a number of younger drag queens, Dusty O’ is well known and liked in venues across the whole drag scene.

She’s invited to the prestigious London College of Fashion as a muse to students, who make her outfits as part of their course.

Out of drag, David Hodge (Dusty) has finally found love with a Japanese man many years younger than himself but faces an anxious wait to find out if his boyfriend can get a visa to return back to the UK.

Vanity von Glow

Picture
After 5 years of success performing, Vanity is a frustrated queen looking to reignite the excitement she once felt for her act.

A heartbreaker in and out of drag, Vanity von Glow (24 years old) always commands attention.

She reached the top of her game after 5 years by winning the acclaimed Trannyshack Academy 2013.

Out of drag, Thom Glow (Vanity) is now looking to reinvent his act as a boy around LGBT venues, as well as continuing to perform as Vanity on the side.

Rosie Beaver

Picture
Rugby player by day and flamboyant drag queen by
night, Rosie (29 years old) breaks all stereotypes by living an unlikely juxtaposition.

Always looking for love online - he meets them as Chris and finds it hard to tell boys he likes that he’s a drag queen by night. He has a straight twin brother who is always on hand to provide an opinion.

He plays rugby in a gay team ‘Kings Cross Steelers’ and is the only sibling to play sports.

He is one of two producers for the cult West End show ‘Cool Rider’ and sees theatre as his long-term ambition.

In the series he becomes a mentor to his best friend and fellow rugby player Nick who decides to explore performing in drag himself.

Vicki Vivacious

Picture
A Supreme Fabulette whose theatre aspirations led her to
be a part of the top drag troupe: with ideas of a one women show and TV stardom she's got a fame hungry attitude.

After dealing with a death in the family, a relationship breakup, and epilepsy, Vicki (27 years old) took a 6 month break from drag to rejuvenate and reinvent her act based on Paris Hilton, an idol of Vicky’s.

Out of drag, Aaron Johns (Vicki) came from Cornwall with dreams of starring on the West End stage, but his epilepsy required a flexible job where he was his own boss, hence the move to drag.

He starred in Priscilla Queen of the Desert in London’s prestigious West End. He’s a member of the acclaimed Drag troupe Supreme Fabulettes, directed by Kylie’s Creative Director William Baker.

The Drag Queens of London will premiere on Tuesday, April 22nd on London Live.

For viewers outside the UK, episodes will be posted online, so you can catch up on all the drama and British drag realness!

4/10/2014

Picture
Move over Royal Family- here comes another type of British royalty! Across the pond, a fabulous reality TV series is set to hit the airwaves. The Drag Queens of London, an original reality series, will premiere on Tuesday, April 22nd on London Live (which is a brand new network dedicated to purely London entertainment). This eight-part series is made up of one hour episodes starring well-known London queens. Some of these queens include: Dusty O, Baga Chipz, Lady Lloyd, Silver Summers, Munroe Bergdorf, Vanity von Glow, Meth, Rosie Beaver and Vicki Vivacious.

The series is a type of “observational documentary”, which highlights the lives of some of the Capital’s most talented drag performers. London is known for having one of the largest and most diverse drag scenes in the world.  The Drag Queens of London is giving the culture of London drag its due screen time!

Check out a 30-second teaser below:

Jonathan Boseley, the Head of Programming for London Live, had this to say about the fabulous upcoming series:

"The world of the London Drag Queen is not exactly as you would imagine," he says. "These are incredibly talented artists but they are real people as well and sometimes the drama isn’t just on the stage."
PictureEvgeny Lebedev with the Drag Queens of London in March 2014.
The series producer at the Connected Set, Becky Maynard, spoke upon the deep, revealing nature of the show, as well:

“There’ll be plenty of the expected glitzy and glamorous performances but we’ll also learn more about the stories behind the performer as the war paint comes off[…]

"These courageous and colourful characters have a lot on their plate and we’ll see them triumph against the odds to forge careers, find love and make their lives as both drag queens and real men in the capital. We can’t wait to tell all the stories this spring”.

In this statement, Dusty O, one of the featured queens on The Drag Queens of London, sheds light upon the importance of a show like this on London Live:

“Drag doesn’t discriminate. Queens come in all shapes, sizes, hues and ages and are endowed with some extraordinary talents. It’s great to be part of a programme that celebrates and showcases the diversity and dynamism of London’s drag scene. It’s going to be an eye-opening and electrifying journey for viewers and drag queens alike”.

Check out two of the most recently introduced queens from the series: Vicki Vivacious and Meth & The Familyyy Fierce!
For viewers outside the UK, episodes will be posted online at London Live, so you can catch up on all the drama and British drag realness!

This week, she took a break from walking children in nature to premiere the music video for her song Amigos Son Heroes/ La Telaraña (which translates as Friends Are Heroes / The Cobweb), off her new album Hot Skunx. We love Tammie for keeping true to herself; this new video is anything but ordinary.

Throughout the video, Tammie steals the spotlight with a voluminous, bright red wig, as she sings entirely in Spanish with an accompanying guitarist. Friends gather around her and celebrate as she serenades and dances around the group. Tammie’s “Old Hollywood” style is also expressed through the vintage style of filming. The colors, the hair styles, and the outfits are of another era. Tammie's art always pushes the boundaries of drag- and Amigos Son Heroes/ La Tearaña's originality is yet another perfect example!

Get ready to put on your five-inch heels and vogue it out, lip sync for your life, and strut down that runway to win the crown: all in the comfort of your own home! Drag Ball: The Game, the first ever entirely drag-focused board game, just hit the market, and it may just be the best board game yet! With 5-12 players, this game is the perfect addition to any party full of drag lovers. Players get the chance to battle each other through mini-challenges, lip syncs, and fashion competitions, just like in RuPaul's Drag Race! Make sure not to fall into the Bottom 2, or you'll be lip syncing it out in a live performance against your competitors!

Drag Ball: The Game is an original idea, with 12 unique drag queen characters. These fierce queen personalities are picked by players as their identity in the game. With drag names like Rita B. Itch, Ginny Tonic, and Shay DeLady, there is a drag persona for everybody. Each player competes to improve their Tenacity, Wit, Aesthetic, and Tricks. The cherry on top of this game board sundae is that Chad Sell (the famed artist who designs some of our favorite Drag Race queen artwork) is the artist for the Drag Ball: The Game characters. Chad Sell's artwork brings the game and its characters to life! Pictured below are the 12 game characters:
James Campbell, the creator of the game, had the following to say about Drag Ball:

“I wanted to make sure that this game was a legitimate existence of its own,” he explains. “That’s why I went back to the roots. After watching Paris Is Burning, the famous documentary about the drag balls of the 1980s, I came to see that, at its core, our favorite show is just one big Drag Ball. Reading, shade, voguing, runway stomping… it’s all an homage to where today’s drag grew up. The show embraces that piece of herstory… my game does, too. It’s all given with love.”

Check out Drag Ball:The Game's website to view the game rules, to admire Chad Sell's genius queen artwork, and to order the game. This is the type of game you'll be asked to bring back to the party over and over again!
