Top Drag Queen Photographer Magnus Hastings Showcases Work in NYC 'Why Drag?' Exhibition

5/25/2014

Everyone loves to gag over photographs of their favorite queens, and chances are, some of the photographs have been taken by talented drag queen photographer, Magnus Hastings. His popular Facebook page, Dragged Around the World, archives some of his best work. This celebrated artist has been photographing drag queens for the past 10 years- and his artwork showcasing queens is taking the world by storm! Hastings' first photo exhibition in New York, Why Drag?, will run during Pride and the summer months (May 26-August 26), at the OUT NYC Hotel. The best part about this unique exhibition is that each queen he photographs explains why it is that they do drag (but you'll have to the exhibit to see that!)

Magnus thought one of the queen's answer was so funny that he couldn't help sharing it with Drag Official so we're passing it along as a teaser for the rest of the exhibition:
"Because I like to wear pantyhose!" -Tammie Brown
The queens displayed in Hastings' photographs include Bianca Del Rio, Courtney Act, Adore Delano, Sharon Needles, Jinkx Monsoon, and Alaska Thunderfuck, among many, many, many others!  Drag Official had the great pleasure of chatting with Magnus Hastings about his exhibition, and what it was like working closely with these drag icons:
Picture
What can we expect from your upcoming Why Drag? exhibition?

I would say the show is quite a diverse collection of images. With this kind of work it is all quite organic, shooting when and where ever I can, just trying to catch a moment that represents each queen well. I like to think  you get to see drag through my eyes: an amazing creative world full of artists who are constantly thinking up new ideas, experimenting. I try to change it up if its not working, so I often arrange to shoot with no definite structure or lighting set up. I see what we have at our disposal and make it happen. it is a great way to get your adrenaline pumping!

Over your career, you've worked with many of the top drag queens. How have those experiences been?

I ran around the streets of West Hollywood with Adore  with me just trying things. I wanted to shoot her iconic Budweiser swimsuit and the images are now classics. There is a new one, and a favorite of mine in the show, along with a whole unseen look.

Sharon Needles I had 20 minutes in her hotel room before the drag race launch party  in New York but her room wasn't big enough to shoot so I ended up putting up my background in the corridor, fearing we would be shut down because of the major obstruction we caused. But I got the shot , which is one of my favorites.

And Alaska needs a mention because she is just so lovely. We had an afternoon a bit like Adore's. Jumped in my car and just drove around seeing what grabbed my attention. I think those are my favorite shoots. Mixing day light with flash and using the surrounding area as a backdrop. Like that last "Mean Gays" shoot i did with Courtney- everything just worked!

Of course , Courtney Act is my muse and we are constantly shooting and coming up with ideas together, I actually filmed her Drag Race audition tape. We have been working together  for 9 years now so there is a lot of trust there. She knows I have her back.

Who can we look forward to seeing you photograph in the coming months?

Well I am opening the show in New York and then jumping on a plane to my native UK for a holiday which is much needed. I think my camera will stay safely in its bag for 3 weeks or so. Then back to New York for Pride and start work on moving the show around America. The plan is to go to cities where there is a big drag audience and then shoot the top queens there to then include in the show. I want it to be a "breathing" exhibition and changeable. And obviously I have only chipped the surface of talent in drag world. I am thinking about Sydney Mardi Gras to show it next year and there are so many great queens there .. its where i fell in love with drag, so it would be great to go back.

How did the 'Why Drag?' idea come about?

The "Why Drag?" question just came as I started to put the images together as a book. I figured I needed some text and that it was a loose question that could be interpreted in many ways.  I actually mean it in a very positive way, but some drag hags, not the drag queens, get all uppity about it .. " the question should be WHY NOT?" etc etc but i think that is more telling about their state of mind. I mean it in terms of "what brought you to this place where drag is a big part of your life" it's a gentle question, but I love a bit of controversy so let people read into it what they like.

Nina West Talks About Her Innovative Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Drag Show, Working with Nearly Every Queen from RuPaul's Drag Race & Much More!

5/15/2014

This month, one of our very own Queen of the Week Hall of Famers, and RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 hopeful Nina West debuted an innovative new drag show: Nina West’s Excellent Adventure. The action-adventure show captures the experience of Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books by allowing audience members to vote on the direction of the performance using their smart phones. We caught up with Columbus Ohio’s drag darling to find out more about Excellent Adventure, working with veteran Drag Race queens, and what her fans can expect next!

Picture
Drag Official: The 'Choose-Your-Own-Adventure' concept for your new show, Nina West's Excellent Adventure, is so innovative, interactive, and fun! What inspired you to come up with this concept for the show?

Nina West: When I was growing up, I loved the Choose Your Own Adventure series books. I would jump around and read every possible route, journey, and path, seeing where I could go and what adventure I could go on. I was also slightly obsessed with Indiana Jones. I loved those huge adventure stories. This show has been six years in the making.

D.O.: I know you want to keep your cards close to your chest, but what kind of adventure can we expect from the show?

N.W.: The audience can expect the unexpected! We like to catch them off guard! This show is so different from anything else I have produced. I have worked with top notch artists in a variety of fields to execute this show. We have an app for your smart phone so people can take part in interactive voting - so they can choose which way the show goes! We also have texting set up for voting. We want people to really run the show and choose what they see! I just wanted to create an experience unlike anything else going on out there right now, and this amazing cast and crew has pulled it off flawlessly. I am super lucky to be able to work with some of the most amazing people.

Picture
D.O.: You have been in Columbus for a number of years. What do you enjoy the most about the city? Do you feel that Columbus is an underrated LGBT city?

N.W.: I absolutely love this city. I am proud to call Columbus home. Why do I love it so much? The people. Plain and simple. You can do anything here and be anything here. If you need help, you reach out and people want to jump on board and work with you. It is a city of growth and support and love. They embrace the art of drag and celebrate it. And you know, I am not sure why people have this idea of Columbus being viewed as underrated as an LGBT city. We have an enormous LGBT population, and our community, as a whole, is pretty unified. We have strong support from our straight allies in this city. But you know, maybe we like to be a hidden gem and surprise the hell out of people when they visit. Columbus is great. Come, check it out for yourself, and I promise you will fall in love.

D.O.: You have an extremely loyal fan base (whenever we have a competition on Drag Official, your fans come out in the thousands to vote!) How did you come to have such a large, dedicated fan base?

N.W.: You know, I am not sure how it all happened. I am very fortunate. I am very thankful. I think I am real. I try to connect with people. I work hard to be involved with my community. I celebrate others. I am honest, and forthright. And I work very hard. Success is not handed over or just given. It takes a lot of heart, soul, and sacrifice, and it also takes humility. I may not be the fishiest girl on the block, or the best dancer, or even the funniest, but I am devoted deeply to the people who have gotten me to the level I am at, and I work very hard to raise the bar for myself because I feel a strong connection and responsibility to my friends and fans.

Picture
D.O.: We heard you auditioned for RuPaul's Drag Race season 7! What made you want to audition? Have you auditioned for any past seasons?

N.W.: I absolutely love RuPaul's Drag Race. I am a huge fan. And you hear every girl on the show say it is the Olympics of drag, because, well, it is. Why wouldn't I want to be part of that? I would love the chance to be part of that sisterhood and family, and I would want the chance to better myself. You can't possibly walk away from an experience like that and not be changed. There is an evolution that can be had if you go into the experience the right way. For so many who may audition, it is about exposure, fame, money. And yeah, I would love to compete for that cash prize, don't get me wrong, but I would also LOVE to be able to say I did it. I accepted the challenge and - win, lose, or draw - I succeeded. I have auditioned since season 2, and I feel like I have unfinished business with it. Maybe one day. I keep a positive outlook and if it doesn't happen, I will audition again next season. And the season after.

Picture
D.O.: You are constantly hosting season 6 queens from RuPaul's Drag Race at Axis. How has it been working with all of them?

N.W.: I have had the pleasure and privilege of working with almost every contestant from the show (...almost). I think I have maybe 9 girls that I have not worked with (YET!). And, you know, every experience is different because every girl is different. But almost every girl is fun and fabulous. And I love showing off our city and our amazing crowds to the girls. Columbus has it going on and the city has fallen in love with many of the Drag Race girls that have performed at Axis. Sure, you get a bad attitude every once and awhile, but that really is a rarity. I mean, we can dish if you wanna sometime. I do have some flawless stories. The Drag Race girls almost always come ready to play and have fun and I have made a lot of lasting friendships as a result. Season 6 has been particularly awesome, and we are still working through the roster of gals. Bianca, Milk, Adore, Vivacious, Ben, Laganja, and Joslyn are all making stops here this summer.  Courtney was just here this past weekend and she really rocked it out. The crowd lived for her, and she was on top of her game. She is a star!

D.O.: Do you have any upcoming projects you'd like to tell us about?

N.W.: I am excited to start work on more puppet projects at my studio as well as begin work on a new super top secret project that should be ready just in time for the holidays. I do like the element of surprise, and I really do intend to keep people on their toes. Things are really just starting to get exciting.

Nina West’s Excellent Adventure wraps up with four shows this weekend at Axis Nightclub. Get show times and ticket info here!

The RuPaul's Drag Race Queens Respond to 'She-Mail' Controversy

4/14/2014

Picture
Following the "Female or She-Male' controversy revolving around a mini challenge in episode 4 of this season of RuPaul's Drag Race, Logo made the executive decision to pull the episode. The network went even further, to announce that it will also be ending the use of the famous tagline "You've got She-Mail" from the show. This announcement has generated a lot of discussion on the topic on every social media platform, and even a petition to get 'She-Mail' to shantay. We wanted to recap what previous contestants thought about the issue so here are some of their responses:

Phi Phi O'Hara took to Tumblr for her response to the issue:
Picture
"In my opinion this is so ridiculous! What upsets me even more is the fact that some of the contestants that are complaining about it didn’t have a problem being on the show or getting their fame and success knowing this was part of show. Never was this intended to offend anyone or upset anyone. I love the transgender community soooooo much but I have to say “SheMail” had nothing to do with you until some of the transgender community made it about themselves. I understand how as a community some feel this brings the community and the view of gender identity harder to accept but in all reality you are what you answer to. If you feel the word does not represent who you are then it shouldn’t bother you to begin with.

The show has created such a place for the LGBT community in this world. It has made it ok for us to be who we are and has shown the world we are not freaks and we deserve love just like anyone else in this world. The show has not only had transgender guests but many prior contestants that are transgender and have done nothing but given them love, support, respect and catapulted their career plus given them a voice that may otherwise have been silent or not as loud had it not been for a show that gave them support. This subject saddens me because it is our community that has decided this word describes who we are and considers it a negative.

I support the transgender community and have so many close friends that I love dearly. I want a world that accepts everyone for who they are and who they are meant to be."

Season 2's very own Miss Congeniality, Pandora Boxx, posted the following response on her Facebook page, along with a link to an article by trans icon and activist (and a past guest on RuPaul's Drag Race) Our Lady J:
Picture
"RuPaul's Drag Race is the first EVER show to feature an entire cast of drag queens. It has made us question gender rules dictated to us by our society. To me that is part of what drag is all about, breaking down those gender rules. When transgender contestants have opened up about who they are they were greeted with open arms. Yet, somehow this show is the enemy we should be fighting for to gain equality.

I do want to say, I love and respect all of my transgender friends and community. I always have and always will.

I was never offended nor were any of the contestants (who were fighting for screen time to get their face on TV) by the phrase "You've Got She-mail." We all just saw it as a take off of America's Next Top Model and then we all pretend to be "shes" for a living. This phrase has also been on the show for 5.5 seasons.

I certainly never want to see someone belittled and legitimately hurt by anything. In my opinion this was not hate speech. To me this just isn't the battle that needed to be fought. This has the potential to open flood gates we may not want open. Trust me the list of offensive words is growing exponentially. I just don't see this as a victory for transgender rights. We all already believed you should have them.

I certainly understand that words can indeed cause pain. I've dealt with that all my life. But then I realized that I am giving these words power over me. I refuse to be defined by words and I refuse to let words bring me down."

Picture
Manila Luzon posted a more light hearted response on her Facebook page:

"Because I am offended by it, RuPaul's Drag Race will ALSO edit out the last episode of season 3 where Raja Gemini kicks my ass and wins the crown!

And because EVERYONE was offended, the entire season of RuPaul's All Stars Drag Race will be edited off the face of the earth."

Picture
Season 4 winner, Sharon Needles, took a similarly sassy approach to addressing the issue:

I think [any man] who wears huge wigs, exaggerated make up, skimpy outfits, giant lashes, and impossible shoes to impersonate (slander) a woman is a complete misogynist!! They should all be edited out of all and past episodes of Rupaul's Drag Race.

On Twitter, openly transgendered Season 2 contestant Sonique made her stance crystal clear:
Picture
@RuPaul I was never offended by your show. Not everybody has the same sense of humor. I openly think #yougotshemail is brilliant. Xoxoxoxo

Picture
Shannel, one of the original Season 1 contestants as well as one of the final four from RuPaul's All Stars Drag Race, threw in her opinion on the issue, as well:

"Dumb dumb and even more fucking dumb!!!! If you were ever offended by the use of " she mail" on drag race then to be honest you probably shouldn't have been watching the show in the first place. Fuck stop taking shit so seriously and get over it. Whomever wants to argue the point don't even bother messaging me because I could care less!!!!"

Picture
Even Mathu Andersen - make-up artist extraordinaire and long time friend of RuPaul - expressed his disappointment with the decision via Facebook:

"Apparently the punny and perky term " You've got shemail" has been stricken from use on RuPaul's Drag Race.....VICTORY!........albeit a hollow one. A victory, because apparently you can petition and harangue and shame using the awesome power of social media to extract an apology.....hollow, in that it is hard to exact the requisite level of authentic remorse from such methods........nevermind, surely the result must take precedence over the method........Kudos kids.

"we outta have one of these every year"- Chastity Pariah"

Unfortunately, outspoken transgender activist and former Drag Race season 3 contestant Carmen Carrera seems to be receiving some of the blow from this controversy due to her recent stance on the issue. Here is what she had this to say on Facebook:
Picture
So once again people are mad at something that doesn't concern them. I'm making a post about this to get a couple of things straight. First of all I'm not the one to accept slurs from anyone. I've always been that way. In high school I watched gay kids get beat up and bullied and you know what, I remained quiet. Why? Because I was afraid to be treated the same way. Some words do hurt other people.
I hadn't initially commented on the "Female or Shemale" game on Drag Race when many people initially came forward and complained about it. I sat and thought about it for a whole week. I decided to make a comment on how I believed drag race was a platform for drag artists to showcase their creativity and how the show brought a lot of acceptance to drag queens mainstream. I also said that drag race should be more conscious of the words they use and shouldn't further objectify transwomen with a game that obviously hurt a lot of the shows fans in the first place.
Drag race has now, weeks after they already made a comment about it and after I said my peace, that they are removing that word from the show. Great. Right?
Well now I'm dealing with a bunch of people who think it's ok to personally attack me on social media for standing up for those who were offended and hurt by the words on the show. That ain't even cool boo.
I can only do so much and honestly I rather be a real person than a fake bitch who will sit and allow others to use ignorance and hatred towards me or other trans people as if it's ok.
This isn't high school. We need to grow up a little. It's real life. I think people should educate themselves on respect and maybe, just maybe will the world begin to change for the better.
I also think that using Ru-Mail or Fe-Mail may be a better substitute... Either way, you still get your favorite show and Rupaul still gets paid ‪#‎amenforthat ‪#‎peacebewithyou

So, what do you think? Did Logo make the right decision, or did they go too far?

68 back-up dancers. 15,000 fans in the audience. Earlier this month, Courtney Act opened the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras with a power performance of Fergie's 'A Little Party'. The video has finally surfaced, and it is EVERYTHING!

Courtney called this one of her top 3 all time performances to date, and we could not agree more. That shimmering couture outfit, those powerful vocals, the fierce moves she was serving, all we can say is YASS! This is up there with Courtney's performance in Lady Gaga's 'Applause' lyric video.

Check out the whole sickening performance below:

Rounding out Cycle 4 of our Queen of the Week series is the ultra-talented San Francisco beauty, Becky Motorlodge. She has made quite a name for herself in the beauty industry and in the West Coast drag scene, a powerful and dangerous combination. Becky was one of the most highly predicted queens for RuPaul's Drag Race season 6, landing a spot on nearly everyone's cast list, but shocked fans everywhere when she wasn't chosen.

Becky was born the youngest of 4 children, and despite her humble beginnings as part of a colorful, multiracial family, she always dreamed of making her own path to stardom! This California girl got her first taste of the spotlight at the legendary Trannyshack in San Francisco. She fully embraced her ability to serve up eye candy for the audience, and became a truly stunning visual diva.

As a visual chameleon, Becky has created a truly dynamic nightlife personality. While some might expect her to play up the campy aspect of her name, Becky actually serves a huge helping of glamour with a generous side of seduction in her performances. While on stage, her fierce, bone-chilling gazes breathe new life into the phrase ‘resting bitch face’, off-stage she’s a Miss Congeniality that everyone needs to know!

Becky’s talents in the beauty industry have spanned over two decades now, and she has used every moment of that time to mold her image into a flawless, larger than life personality.

Her abilities have earned her a reputation in styling that precedes her, as well as the honorary title of ‘Wig Whisperer.’ Not only has she created many fierce styled wigs for herself, but also for the models of the ever fabulous Jose A. Guzman and too many mega divas to count. With her crafty hand touching so many wigs over the past years, you might just find that your favorite flawless diva is rocking gorgeous hair with Ms. Motorlodge to thank for it!

Becky draws inspiration from beauty icons of both the past and present, and puts her own unique touch to each look she creates. But, fear not: she’s not stingy with her knowledge. If you want to learn some of the tricks of Becky’s trade, you can check out her instructional wig styling tips here!

Check out a couple of her marvelous looks in her phenomenal Halloween performance of Gaga's Monster below:

..As well as her Kylie Minogue tribute performance...
You say polished? We say Becky Motorlodge.
Despite having a long, successful career, Becky continues to grow and learn. She’s driven by a thirst for knowledge, and she’s lapped up enough beauty tips and tricks to write an encyclopedia on the subject! She hopes to inspire young, budding queens to reach for greatness and blossom into the beautiful stars they have the potential to be. Never settling for anything less than her best, Becky is a shining example in the drag world. This captivating, thought provoking performer continues to let her star burn brightly as she takes the stage each night, creating and sharing beauty the best way she knows how!
