Carmen Carrera To Star In New VH1 Docuseries 'TransAmerica' Produced by Tyra Banks

Carmen Carrera is certainly no stranger to the cameras with her time on RuPaul's Drag Race and her rapidly growing career as a model. She's also no stranger to trans activism, speaking out as a role model for her community. It should come as no surprise, then, that Carrera will be one of the main focal points of VH1's new docuseries, TransAmerica. The series plans to follow five Chicago trans women in their everyday lives as they struggle to balance busy schedules, career goals, relationships of all types, and the stresses of everyday life as a woman - trans or otherwise. While the show will feature trans women and talk about trans issues, it goes beyond just that. As Susan Levinson, executive VP of Programming For VH1, said:

It would be easy to focus on the transgender aspect, but this series is about so much more. This is a show about a group of compelling, gorgeous young friends who are on a unique journey while staying true to their authentic selves. We believe that message resonates.
Carmen will be relocating to Chicago for the eight week series, and will live there as a role model to the other cast members. She will be joined each week by a cast of four other fabulous women (pictured below in order from left to right): Giselle, a recent college grad prepping for reassignment surgery; Natalia, a beauty consultant working toward reconnecting with her family; Victory, a woman who faces and overcomes transphobia in her goals to becoming a doctor; and Sidney, a party girl who's looking for a focus in life.

In addition to sporting an amazing cast of girls, the series is also going to be produced by the one and only Tyra Banks. Tyra has been a long-time trans ally, bringing trans issues to the mainstream with her support for past Top Model contestants Isis King, and most recently, Virgg from the Cycle 20. With such a stunning and talented cast and the amazing producing talents of Tyra, we're sure that Carmen and her girls will bring us a series that will move, educate, and entertain audiences all across America.

Spill the T. Will you be watching?

Bearded Drag Queen Conchita Wurst Wins Eurovision 2014

When Conchita Wurst of Austria first stepped onto the Eurovision stage, tensions and concerns immediately arose over whether Europe was ready to support a gender-bending drag queen in this iconic international competition. However, over the course of the singing competition, Conchita won many hearts and fans across the globe. The Eurovision Song Contest came to a close today, and Conchita Wurst was announced the winner to a TV audience of more than 120 million. Yes, 120 MILLION PEOPLE! This win for Conchita makes him the first drag queen to ever win the competition.

The crowning of Conchita Wurst comes at an interesting time, and is somewhat surprising to many, given the political undertones that Eurovision can undertake. With the global tensions over Russia's new anti-gay policies, there were a lot of those who thought Wurst would be too provocative for some of the traditionally conservative audiences he was performing to. However, the Eurovision viewers and judges have certainly spoken, and Conchita's talents shined through during his emotional and stunning ballad, 'Rise Like A Phoenix,' during the finale to help him rise to the top. You can watch the full performance below:

Conchita's win was the first for Austria since 1966, and it's one that definitely has people talking. Not only does it hold some weight on the international politics spectrum, but the gender-bending winner also has provided a light of hope for those struggling with harsh anti-LGBTQ laws within their own countries.

Conchita's vocal talentes earned him the win, but we're also gagging over his stunning fashion sense, the beautifully executed androgyny that he brought with him to the stage week after week. You can check out some of his looks below:
Condragulations to Conchita Wurst on his big win! We can't wait to see where his talents take him next!

Notorious Club Kid King Michael Alig To Be Released From prison Today

5/5/2014

Picture
Before RuPaul's Drag Race took drag and gender nonconformity mass market, there was the club kid movement. In fact, without the club kids, RuPaul's Drag Race may never have come to fruition at all, as the influences from his time with the club kids helped shape Ru into the glamazon monster we know and love today.

The club kids, including people like James St. James, Amanda Lepore, RuPaul, Richie Rich, and many more, were led by the bold and voracious, Michael Alig. Alig and his club kids were hired by all the hottest clubs around New York City to throw and host parties, dressing and acting in larger-than-life ways, bringing in young customers and attracting attention. This they did, and they did it very well.

The video below gives viewers a rare inside-look at the club kid scene, where you'll see Alig and RuPaul amongst others from the vibrant club kid scene:

Picture
Unfortunately, things quickly went south for the club kids as drug use became much more prominent and problematic. The club kids were shaken when one of their main dives, the Limelight, was shut down as a result of drug related investigations. However, the club kid movement was truly devastated, and arguably ended, when Alig was arrested and sentenced to nearly 20 years behind bars for murdering and dismembering their drug dealer, Andre "Angel" Melendez,  while under the influence. This event heavily effected many close to Alig. James St. James eventually memorialized it in his book, Disco Bloodbath, which later became the basis for the 2003 film Party Monster.

Today, after nearly 20 years behind bars, Alig is scheduled for a conditional release from the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy, NY. The release has sparked apprehension, controversy, and excitement amongst those who know and have followed Alig's story. Only time will tell whether he'll try to return to his old wiles, or if he's truly turned over a new leaf. Check out the video below of an interview with him during his time in prison, and tell us what you think! Do you think he'll return to his old tricks, or is this the beginning of a whole new and improved life for the notorious club kid king, Michael Alig?
