Neil Patrick Harris vs. Jinkx Monsoon: Who Makes a Better Hedwig?

6/11/2014

The dragtastic Hedwig and the Angry Inch has become the most talked about show on Broadway following an unstoppable performance and a number of honors at this past week's Tony Awards (including best revival of a musical and best performance by a leading male in a musical by Neil Patrick Harris).

Today, Andrew Rannells from Book of Mormon, Girls, and The New Normal was named as Harris' replacement.  It's always sad to see a queen sashay away, but we're excited to see what Andrew can bring to the show.

With everyone talking about this Broadway sensation, a photo of Jinkx Monsoon as Hedwig has begun to re-circulate the interwebs. These are 2 fierce divas who both completely slay this look, but we had to ask: who do you think makes a better Hedwig?

Do you mean who makes a better Hedwig visually? Because wouldn't you say vocals are relevant. Jinkx: http://youtu.be/JFbC6kyc9bY?t=2m50s [I thought she was an outside shot for the Broadway replacement but maybe it will last long enough to have a 3rd Hedwig. If not, maybe a tour? I think that's Jinkx's best shot besides performing it in Seattle again. I'm sure Neil is great, but vocally it's all Jinkx.

No waaay. Jinkx has a great voice, but NPH has the part down. If you've ever heard Jinkx sing Origin of Love, she kinda falls flat and can't sing it the way it's intended to be sung because it reaches outside of her range towards the climax. I don't doubt she could probably do it with the right rehearsal and vocal coach, but as it stands, she hasn't shown the caliber of talent required to lead a show like this on Broadway yet. At that, she's a bit TOO feminine in drag. Remember, Hedwig isn't trans by choice -- she's trans by a series of unfortunate circumstances. That's still a man underneath the wig and makeup...and it should look and feel that way. I love Jinkx -- but NPH has this role down right now.
