Bianca Del Rio |
The cast of RuPaul's Drag Race season 6 has been the most talked about yet, and queens like Bianca Del Rio are the reason why! Bianca's drag career has reached from the streets of New Orleans all the way up to New York, and has spanned nearly two decades. She has so much experience that fans of the show have argued that she is too qualified for the competition.
Bianca first got her start in drag through theater, when she was cast in Pageant in 1996. From there, Bianca moved onward and upward to drag stages all across New Orleans, eventually going on to win the title of New Orleans Gay Entertainer of the Year 3 different times, and New Orleans Gay Bitch of the Year 6 times! If being named Gay Bitch of the Year a half a dozen times isn't a serious warning to watch out for her reading, we don't know what is! It wasn't until Hurricane Katrina swept through the southern coast that Bianca decided to move on to bigger and better (and drier) things in New York City!

Once in New York, Bianca made a name for herself as a hostess and comedian, using her dry insult comedy routines to read celebrities, queens, and audience members all across the city. Eventually she connected with the crass queen of sass, Lady Bunny, to perform for the weekly cabaret at XL Nightclub. Since her move to New York she has grown as a performer, and her list of titles has grown right alongside her! Last year at the Annual Glam Awards she sashayed away with three different wins, taking the titles of Best Hostess, Best Comedy Performer, and Entertainer of the Year!
While she has won numerous titles for her performances, hosting abilities, and comedic talents in drag, Bianca's collection of awards doesn't stop when she takes off her hair and heels. Bianca has also received a number of awards for her talents as a costume designer. Her day job as a draper's assistant for a theatrical costume company hints at her design talents, but the six different Big Easy Entertainment Awards for Best Costume Design put these talents undeniably on display for the world to see! We certainly look forward to seeing what breathtaking looks she'll put up on the runway, especially if there is a sewing challenge this year.
Along with many other competitors on her season, Bianca's talents have reached beyond the stages of bars and clubs. In 2011, she was featured in a standup comedy special for Logo, One Night Of Standup: Dragtastic! NYC, alongside Drag Race veterans like Pandora Boxx, as well as her season 6 sister Kelly Mantle. This Logo feature was preceded by her appearance on the gay.com web series Queens of Drag: NYC in 2010. And don't forget that appearance in National Lampoon's Dirty Movie!

Hopefully, Bianca will soon be taking her talents to the big screen in a new film announced last year! The film is called Hurricane Bianca, and is to be directed by Matt Kugelman. Though it hasn't received the go-ahead just yet, the first online fundraising campaign (with Indiegogo) for the film was received very positively, raising over $35,000 from fan donations alone. The film's website now provides fans with a detailed overview of the project, as well as a new donations page for those wishing to make sure Hurricane Bianca makes landfall!
With her experience in design, her background in acting, her proven and celebrated comedy skills, and her fierce attitude with looks to match, Bianca enters season 6 of RuPaul's Drag Race as a force to be reckoned with! Clearly she knows how to snatch a title, and she's certainly looking like a strong contender for that Drag Race crown.
