While some queens pride themselves on serving fish, others are reaching for new and exotic levels of fishiness. This June, 3 of L.A.'s finest queens, Detox Icunt, Kelly Mantle & Laganja Estranja became involved in the fascinating Project Mermaids.
We managed to snag a few minutes with the bold, beautiful, and busy Kelly Mantle to find out more about the project...

Drag Official: Hi Kelly! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us. Let's start off with an overview of Project Mermaids. Can you tell us a little more about the project?
Kelly Mantle: Project Mermaids was created by Angelina Venturella and Chiara Salomoni, two photographers brought together by their same passion for the ocean and photography. Their goal is to show how precious our ocean and beaches are, and how well people can function in and around it, photographing models and celebrities in and around the ocean wearing mermaid tails created and donated by The Mertailor Eric from Florida. The result of these combined donations is going to be addressed to saveourbeach.org.
D.O.: How did you get involved with the project?
K.M.: I was asked to be part of the shoot by Curtis William Foreman (who designed the fabulous WigART PopART Headpieces) and Bobby Webster (who produced, styled, and moedeled for the project.)

D.O.: Detox Icunt and Laganja Estranja were both involved in the project as well. Who else participated alongside you?
K.M.: Yes! As I mentioned, Bobby Webster also modeled for the project. Romeo Tostado from America's Next Top Model (Cycle 21) was our featured merman. And the hauntingly gorgeous Ridge Gallagher was also involved!
D.O.: Wonderful! Speaking of Detox and Laganja, how has working with the other queens been for you?
K.M.: I can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon that hanging out with my fresh fishy sisters in a salt-water pool in the Hollywood Hills. Oh, and for a good cause, of course! We had a blast! I tried to get Laganja to deathdrop in her fins. And Detox is the fishiest... in and out of water.

D.O.: Do you think we can expect any more projects like this from you in the future?
K.M.: Sure! As long as we don't get caught and put on the menu at Red Lobster!
D.O.: When can fans expect to see finished products for Project Mermaids?
K.M.: The photographs will be shown next summer in an art show and in a table book that will benefit saveourbeach.org.
