RuPaul's Best Friends Race #1: Jujubee and Raven

While the show might not be called "RuPaul's Best Friend Race," there's no denying that there is a strong sisterhood among the ladies of Logo's hottest reality competition. It's easy to get wrapped up in all the drama and cattiness, but there is also a lot of love and support amongst the members of the drag community. "RuPaul's Best Friend Race" was coined by Lashauwn Beyond in Season 4 of RuPaul's Drag Race, and this new mini series is a playoff of her term, modified from Bee Reed's Daily Dragsbian Tumblr series by the same name. We're starting off this new series with one of our all time favorite duos: Jujubee & Raven.

Jujubee and Raven are two of the fiercest queens in RuPaul's Drag Race herstory, so it's only natural that they migrated towards each other. They're both so fierce, and at this point so popular, that they don't even need last names. Though some friendships between Drag Race queens remain less well known, almost any fan of the show, or drag in general, could tell you that these queens are close. Coined during RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, the two became known by one name and one name only: RuJubee!

These two queens have been partners on Drag Race, they have toured the country together, they have done photo shoots together, and most recently even starred in a Cooking Channel original series together. Anyone who watches the show knows that All Stars was not their first encounter. It was on season 2 of the show that Rujubee began to become what it is today. At first, their friendship was somewhat overshadowed by that between Morgan McMichaels and Raven. However, as the season progressed and Jujubee and Raven worked their way to the top three together, their friendship blossomed and their silly shenanigans began to emerge!

In addition to their 2 seasons together on RuPaul's Drag Race, RuJubee was featured on several episodes of the spin-off series RuPaul's Drag U, a retired show in which three of RuPaul's girls teach three biological women how to embrace their own charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent through the art of drag. During their time on this series we got to see even more of the quick banter and playful teasing that unfolds when they're together. When it comes to reading, these two are at the top of their game! (In Jujubee's words, they will both "read you to filth!") While some may take personal offense at the shady insults that permeate drag culture, these two make it into a friendly battle of wits, throwing and taking shade without missing a beat, that almost always ends in laughter. It takes a strong friendship to find this balance between playful teasing and witty insults!

As hilarious as Jujubee and Raven are most of the time, their relationship goes much deeper than goofy antics. It was on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars (which Rujubee dominated) that everyone saw just how close these queens truly are. In what many revere as the most memorable lip-sync in Drag Race herstory, Raven and Jujubee were pitted against one another going into the finals. After watching the love and respect they had for each other grow throughout the season and delighting over their triumphs and laughter, this moment brought many to tears - including both of these queens. As they both simply stood on stage and sobbed while lip-syncing, they came together to perform as a single unit, side by side and hand in hand, rather than trying to out-do one another.
Whether they are laughing, crying, or throwing shade, seeing these two best friends together never fails to help us see just what a true and sincere friendship looks like!

The Bear's Mom

I watch this show with my kids. My oldest is now 10. She was always that dreamy kid that never fit in, always got made fun of, and who I many times had to restrain myself from not punching small kids who were mean to her. Just kind hearted through it all. We watched Season 2 as it happened during her kindergarten when she was "off" and at a time when I didn't think she'd get the provocative jokes. She discovered Jujubee. That was her favorite and Raven was mine. Juju gave her courage and gave her ideas about glamour , as she put it, and eventually she cut her hair, changed her clothing and style, and began to embrace her inner weirdness. As she accepted herself, other kids began to respond. Now she's got a small group of close friends and she's the coolest, most self-confident kid I know. Today we watched this again together and we both teared up. I love this team. I love RuPaul's Drag Race. I love that these drag queens helped a little girl learn how to be fabulous.

Love live Rujubee!

I love this pair! Thanks for writing this article. I still wish either would have won something, but then again, they did win our hearts! And Bear's Mom, thank you for that story! I am so glad you had shared that :). Rujubee power!
