Darienne Lake Spills the T on Her RuPaul's Drag Race Edit

4/28/2014

The T has been spilt! After being named by many as "the bitch of season 6", Darienne Lake has gone to Tumblr to open up about her "bitchy" RuPaul's Drag Race edit, what surprised her about the show, and how she actually feels about some of the other competitors. As she put it recently, "on the upside, people are spelling my name right when they call me a fat bitch". Here are some non-edited real responses from Darienne Lake that might make you have a change of heart:
Picture
What did you tell people when you went away to film the show?

I told them that I fell while texting and walking to my car in the rain (like an idiot) and broke both my wrist and my phone. I cut hair, so it was important that I needed a good enough excuse not to use my hands.

Regarding her "bitchy" edit:

I must confess, normally I don’t talk shit behind people’s backs. I internalize my feelings and then distance myself from people I don’t click with.

Part of being in this competition is that you are asked about the feelings and thoughts in your head. They aren’t all rainbows and sunshine. Then those private things are on public display. I’m glad that I can see them, learn from them, and try to improve. Life is a journey and I am not finished.

Did anything really surprise you about the taping of the show?

All of it was a surprise. As a fan, you think you know what they are going to do. As a contestant, they flip the script so you don’t know. It was such a great experience, and an eye opening one as well. Yes, the days are long, but as any experienced queen will tell you, she’s had long days that lead into long nights. Gay Pride weekends are drag-a-thons. So buy that girl a drink, a slice of pizza, and give that working girl a dollar.

Picture
Did you feel threatened by Dela?

I was threatened by every queen. Like Velociraptors, it’s not the one you’re looking at, but the one that sneaks up on you. Every girl can snatch that crown. You’ll see. Remember, internet rumors are just that, rumors. Remember the one about Bianca hurting herself week 1? That one was huge. Also remember that this is a reality competition program, not a documentary.

I liked Dela from the first moment we met. When we were paired up for the tops & bottoms challenge, she knocked the wind out of me from bouncing up and down. I almost passed out, but I was secretly hoping Simon from the Pit Crew would give me mouth to mouth.

Most of the banter between BenDeLaCreme and I was snarky and all in good fun. You can even hear laughter in the background. Yes, things did get a little tense, but hopefully you’ll see that work itself out. Dela is a take charge, professional who takes control and gets shit done. I admire her greatly.

Picture
Regarding Snatch Game:

I also planned on doing Big Ang, or Anna Nicole. I thought it would be best to do a complete character.

I have to tell you, Snatch Game is harder than it looks. You have to find the right moment to jump into the conversations without cutting off RuPaul. That’s why I think they used my quips rather than my answers to the questions.

How do you feel about Milk?

We were friends during filming, and are still friends. For the record, I said, “most people might look at Milk and say, ‘I don’t get it.’ but I do. She reminds me of my friend Ambrosia Salad or Glitz Glamour.”

I posted an article on my Facebook page saying that Milk was one of my favorite people this season. She’s a lousy lay, but so nice. (Kidding)

My grandmother used to say, “Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see.”

What do you think? Is it Darienne or the editing?

On the one hand, I feel like there's only so much you can blame on the editing, since they can only work with what you give them. On the other hand, I know those editors can do all manner of black magic. Either way, Darienne herself isn't getting as raw of a deal as Phi Phi or Roxxxy did, and even if she is, lots of fans (myself included) grew to love them after the show.

That said, Darienne has consistently underwhelmed me by her performance this season. I was expecting more from someone who can lay claim to being Pandora's drag mother. Her challenge performance has been subpar to awful (Drag Race Me to Hell notwithstanding), and her runway looks all look like wearable bedsheets. The only time that actually worked in her favor was for her elephant-inspired runway, which to be fair I did like. And the fact that she sent Dela home was insulting. Granted, that's more Ru's fault than anyone's, but still.

Phi Phi and Roxxxy did do some detestable actions. Phi Phi set Jiggly up for failure, demanded in the most insensitive way that Willam needed to leave and threw ridiculous tantrums several times. Roxxxy tried to manipulate Jinkx on an emotional level so that her self-confidence would shatter and she would bomb the challenges.

What has Darienne done that deserves hate? She made some snarky faces and comments, but if a queen deserves hate for those things we would need to hate ALL of them. I agree that it's strange that she made it to the top 4 while constantly performing underwhelming but you can't really blame her for that. It's admirable that she managed to keep her head over water for so long, she's a fighter!

PS: I blame Michelle for the exit of Dela. Literally from the first episode Michelle said that Dela's character was gonna get old fast. Dela did not even deserve to be in the bottom two this week, her looks where the most polished. And who cares if we've seen it before, ALL looks where predictable. Bianca's boatline, Courtney's executive realness outfit from the Rusical episode and Adore's signature hot topic look. Darienne's rainbow colored bodysuit was the only surprise for me this episode. Bottom two had to be Darienne versus Courtney. But the judges literally wanted Dela out.

Bring himself, having a very high opinion of himself (and his talents cannot back this up; e.g. his disbelief in losing a challenge, in which he performed poorly, shown in his eyes), being bitchy without wit, putting others down without the intent of being funny (he was simply vicious), his dresses looked very poor, he wore pink lipstick as a man (which was tiring), excusing his extreme behaviour as, 'this being a competition, his breasts are real, he finds simple performances impossible... shall we go on?

I have to disagree. The only queen as nasty and vicious as Darien Lake was Roxxxy. I think it says a lot about a contestant, in any contest, when they chose to be mean and aggressive rather than just giving their best. I love Drag Race, but when I hear someone rationalize nasty behavior with, "it's a contest and I want to win" it makes me angry. Darien was unacceptably awful to Ben de la Creme. I think it made it even worse that Ben was so sweet. Again, just like Roxxxy. Jinkx was sweet and had some personal flaws (as do we all); Roxxy took advantage and swooped in like a vulture.

Can you guys stop bashing Darienne Lake? She is a big queen and she has been showing her best side of being a big queen. She also slays the lip syncs. Whether or not she is better than Latrice Royale is up for question, Darienne Lake has shown herself to be a formidable contestant as a big queen for this season and that she can match up to the others. This was not insulting to DeLa, Mock Turtle. You make it seem as if Darienne Lake is below Dela, which she is not. Everyone is good in their own way. At the end of the day, Darienne killed the lip sync by matching the song with her movements and that is what counts, while DeLa is unable to adapt.

Also, her runway outfits may have been a certain style but she does try to change it up. There is so much a big queen can wear to feel comfortable yet still look good for the runway challenges. Not only that but all of her runway looks have been polished and well done.

Two things:

1) I wasn't insinuating that Darienne isn't talented; however, disregarding my personal feelings for Dela (and more obviously, your personal feelings for Darienne), their track records didn't support this elimination. As I pointed out elsewhere, with the key being win/high/safe/low/lip-synch, Dela's score through this episode was 2/3/2/1/2 vs. Darienne's 1/1/2/3/3, so the latter staying made no sense. As far as the lip-synch itself goes, Darienne wasn't significantly better than Dela, if at all, and any way you spin it Darienne had the worst set of outfits for the challenge (and I think she'd be the first to admit that).

2) Your tone seems very pointed right now.

Let's not get into the politically correct nonsense. Even Darienne Lake does not find being a big queen offensive. She even appeared on Ricki Lake under that topic. It is not because I want to call her that. Unless the definition of the word has changed, then I apologize. If the definition of the word means what I believe it means, then it is an accurate statement. I find Darienne Lake to be a well polished queen and that's that.

I guess that’s what keeps these shows going. Most people will have different opinions about who’s in the top group, who’s in the bottom. But if you go back to season six, I’m doing that right now - Hulu doesn't have any later episodes - you’ll see that Darian looked pretty bad. Often his pants or skirt was climbing up the inside of his thighs. His legs never looked good. But from the tits up, he’s a winner baby. Too bad for Darien that it’s not a sit down competition.

But I guess it’s all in good fun…. Hopefully.

I don't know anyone of them personally
1/7/2015 03:16:15 pm

There's a difference between pointing out issues and "bashing". Editing can do a lot, but it can't put words into their mouths. I just finished watching Season 6 again and Darienne was just awful to Ben. The editors might have worked it up, but the words came out of Darienne's mouth. As far as looks, Darienne's never matched the quality of Ben's - except for makeup. Darienne has an incredible skill with makeup.
I wonder why they kept Darienne so long. She didn't have the moves, the outfits, or the talents to make it to the top four.

I think it's commendable for you to stand up for someone you like, but I don't think you're being honest. Darian's outfits looked bad often especially if it was anything other than a big dress. Whenever he wore pants or skirts they were very unflattering. And I get it, he has enormous legs, but I'm guessing he knew that when he signed up for the show. I have no complaint with him being a fatty, I see that every time I look in the mirror. But my problem is not with the way he looked, although it's pure fantasy to think that he was better than the 10 contestants who left before him. My issue is very simply that he viciously attacked (not physically) the other contestants, especially Ben. Most of us know what it's like being attacked for being gay, my biggest disappointment watching RuPaul's drag race is seeing just how awful we can be to one another.

She is a talented queen. It's offensive when people want to call someone a big queen just bcz they want to, she's a queen. Her outfits reminded me of Honey from last season(they looked like sheets). I did think her lip sync and moves were better then DeLa. I don't see how a queen can only wear baggy clothes, look at the other bigger queens they wore tight and rocked it.

The editing is truly disastrous this season but it's not all editing. Darienne played the bitch and wasn't savvy about it (not like Bianca) - I don't dislike her for that I guess, but it grates on me so much that she's kept around for the sake of puffed up drama when there's no need - I'm still gonna watch if there's no "villain". Dela was more consistent, had better looks. It doesn't matter because, thanks to shitty editing, it looks like Bianca's going to take it but they're going to crown Adore. Stick a fork in this season because it is DONE.

I agree with you about Adore getting crowned. It does seem like Bianca deserves it more in some ways, but judging from last season's crowning of Jinkx, it seems they go for the underdog more than the most polished or mature. A lot of people last season thought Roxxxy - the more polished of the group - would win, but then they went for Jinkx. I love them all, but Adore does need to be a little more consistent.

Adore has the most cut scenes and really has the only 'story' going, we've seen her grow and develop more, and be helped by other queens to polish her looks. She's prime underdog material, even though I think Bianca's more deserving, Adore's their perfect winner because she's younger. I love Jinx and thought she deserved it, I don't really care who wins now after keeping Darienne around for fake drama and letting Dela go. I just want season 7 to be better than this. Also, whoever is choosing the final songs needs to stop because they've been awful.

NOBODY thought Roxxxy had the slightest chance of winning. Or even placing second.

Eve Summer

I think that IF Adore's crowning has been "pre-ordained," as it were, it is probably more due to the fact that she has incredible star power.

Moreso than anyone else on Drag Race this season, or ever (not including Willam,) she has the potential to TRULY be the next RuPaul. She has it all. She is talented, beautiful, motivated (she already has a damn album coming out! #TilDeathDoUsParty ) and still so YOUNG. She has her whole career ahead of her and she's probably the only queen ever with this much crossover potential, based on her previous recognition for Idol and her star quality.

Excellent point. Agreed. DL isn't remotely funny. But yes, her delusional attitude, hateful "wit," and horrifying fashion sense did add to my desire to watch; praying that this thing would be kicked off. It would make sense to keep it in until the end, keeping viewers' desire intense.

Darienne's personality isn't even the problem. I am just absolutely baffled that they would keep a queen who wears nothing but cheap mumus and - as was mentioned - wearable bedsheets over a polished queen like DeLa. A good lip sync shouldn't be enough to keep you in the competition. Ben should have made it to top 3. It's insane, but it looks like Darienne might actually inexplicably make it to the top. Absolutely INFURIATING.

Oh you are so spot on. It's as if Ru Paul were afraid to kick DL off, as they'd look un-PC. I found this incredibly disappointing. That elephant dress was hideous. Furthermore, Darienne may have been acting to the camera, but his narcissism clearly shows he lives in his own world. It's sad. So I agree with this article, that DL is a bitch, but he's an insecure self-obsessed delusional hateful bitch; she is nothing to the genuine wit of Bianca del Rio.

I'm done with this tired old queen. Size has NEVER been a factor for me in the race for America's Next Drag Superstar. in Season 4 I was rooting for Latrice Royale, as was the embodiment of charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. If Darienne has even a shred of what some of the other queens put out, she hides it well underneath her busted gowns. She's portrayed as a total bitch in the show, which makes people not like her. But the editing can only do so much damage, the rest is all her. I'll be glad to see her go. As for Adore vs. Jinkx, Jinkx was unique in her own way and talented when it came to the challenges. Adore is just young, annoying, whiny, and looks like she started doing drag the night before they started shooting. Go away, Darienne & Adore. Bianca's got this in the bag.

LOL Really?

Adore has won 3 challenges, just like Bianca. She had a slump, but everyone has shown weakness throughout the competition.

Adore is the most talented singer, she has the fiercest walk ever on the damn runway, and her star quality and charisma are undeniable. You're really just hating because you know she's a huge threat to Bianca, because Bianca is almost always repeating an old look, and doesn't have Adore's star quality.

Adore started off really annoyingly - but I fell in love with her over the show. She's just the greatest. And a P.S. - why is Michelle Visage on the show? She's talentless, boring, grabbing at fame as she drowns, hooker; and I swear she is a drag queen.

If Bianca is not crowned, then there is really something wrong, fishy and disgusting going on backstage.Courtney Act is just that,an act and quite artificial.Adore is pretty annoying, too young, not very talented to be honest.Bianca has it all, specially that wit that's so exquisite, really fun. She's quick, smart and actually pretty unselfish with the others quuen who will like to listen and learn. And it's about time to have a Latina wearing that crown and Bianca deserves it.

Last year's title was clearly bewteen Jinkx and Alaska, no way was Roxxxy even been considered and quite frankly if it had to be Roxxxy that Detox had to lip sync against, Detox would have made that final!

Yes Darianne won this lipsync against Dela HOWEVER, Ben was way better then Darianne throughout this season and at a Top 5 stage that is what is should have been based on! Courtney does not deserve a Top 3 finish and this was clearly a ratings move.

Also, if Bianca doesnt win - not only will there be a public outroar i really feel alot of people will not tune in after it! She has been the consumate professional, delivered on every single task and quite frankly if it wasnt for her this season would rank as the worst season of the lot.

Are u kidding? If you do the math, Courtney's score is 2nd to Bianca if you want to base on performance. Adore didn't even deserve to be Top4 and her last win was highly questionable (Probably the most questionable win of all-time). She got pass way too many times for bottom 2. And Dela really bad at lip-sync. Darianne won that fair n square. No t no shade

A-freaking-MEN. I thought that Final 4 episode showed exactly why Darienne deserves to be there: she’s funny, smart, and can act her pants off. Fashion might not be her forte, but it’s sure not Adore’s either and she’s still here (totally agree about her not being Top 4 material. She should’ve gone home that first episode IMO).

I think Top 3 should’ve been Dela, Bianca, and Courtney, with the middle winning by a mile. But since Adore had to be in the top because the show needs a narrative and whiny bratty girls are popular with the teen set, I’m relatively happy with the way things shook out.

Darienne Lake is evil to the core. That bitch had no reason to be nasty, to DeLa or to anyone. She can lip sync. But she can't pick an appropriate outfit for any challenge if her life depended on it. Rainbow sequin jumpsuit? She should have been eliminated episode 3.

I'm a year late, but just finished and I was horrified at Season 6. It had the overall highest number of talented Queens that were close in talent. But the judges (aka Michelle and Santino) didn't seem to be able to judge their way out of a paper bag and thought they were top judges, reminiscence of a low to mid level Queen being delusional about their skill level. You could see several of the guests completely disagreeing with them, whether they said it or not, in a way not seen in prior seasons.

Darien wasn't just a shock during the "DelaCreme" scandal, he kept squeaking by when he shouldn't have. He wasn't all bad, but he was very inconsistent, sometimes hitting it hot, and as the season went on, hitting lows more and more. People keep saying he's a great lip syncer, but from the footage I saw, I think viewers must be smoking denial. Darien is an okay lyp syncer, but not event top seven ranking.

At first I thought they kept Darien to replace Ben del creme. Dela was pretty good at the performance, but they kept cutting away from her and giving her minimal time, which is often a clue which queen they don't want to win. When saw that I watch closely, and you can see when she is about to hit it hard and strong, they cut away, sometimes entirely, but sometimes she's in the background. Watch carefully, and you see she actually DOES kill it, far better than Darien or the other lip sync competitor was giving it. What made it worse, they gave Darien so much screen time during that lip sync, that if she was killing it, they would have had more hot moments, but they clearly gave all her best moments and then had to pad with mediocre moments. The whole room I was watching with judged her to not be the better lip syncer, and we could care less if she's mean, we only care about the talent and growth. Like everyone else here, when we saw Dela eliminated over Darien, we almost quite RuPaul altogether, and we *pay* for individual episodes to catch up.

Worse, when Darien made top seven, I thought either their is nepotism or some special thing they are going to pull out. When she beat out Dela, I thought, seriously, she's bribed someone or is someone's relative or they're going to pull some big drama and bring Dela back.

But when they ran top four like it was top three, and then I saw the way the director looks at her, I was sure it was nothing but nepotism. She couldn't really dance during the dance phase, on the treadmill phase she stole other Queen's moves, and her acting performance was a lot like her whole season, some moments really awesome, some moments so painful she should never be top four, much less in a RuPaul video, and the rest mediocre. Mediocre doesn't get to act with Ru Paul.

Honestly, we're convinced Damien is either sleeping with the video director or the director wants to be, and the show was told to make her win. I think RuPaul said, if she is good enough, and she wasn't, so I think RuPaul said, NFW, and who ever the powerful person was said, yes the F way, and the compromise was she wouldn't be in the top three, because that has to be earned, but they can artificially get her to the top four (and Michele Visage clearly had it out for Dela), and then move the top three experience to the top four so Damien can be given the top three experience.

Until told otherwise, I think thats exactly what happened, and I think you have to be blind to believe that Damien belonged in even the top five.

Darienne says can teach Bianca "sensitivity"... then calls herself an "old bitter queen." Bianca knows sensitivity, the old bitter queen does not... this reinforces my opinion that DL is a delusional, hateful, sad old bitter queen; who didn't deserve to stay in passed her first competition. DL wanted this win for herself, not for the support of the community.

Since we have to deal with the "Reveal," thought I'd put in my 2 cents! I could never understand why Darienne was so snarky in the 1st place, whether to be funny or not; the edit makes her truly look like all believe her to be; "a bitter old queen!" I can relate, but that b!tch is even more rude than moi! lol!

Oh Darriane. I don’t care enough to spell it right. Catty queen, queen in a trash bag realness. You made it to spot four but not for talent honey. Pitty?
