Honey Mahogany may not have given up her day job as a social worker after appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 5, but that hasn't stopped her from having an impressive drag AND music career as well. So many Drag Race queens have taken advantage of their newfound publicity from the show by releasing original music and covers, and although some of these have been underwhelming, Honey has a unique and refreshing style that never disappoints. Her more serious tone reflects the time and dedication she put into the EP.
After releasing one single and two music videos since appearing on the show last year, Honey has finally released her debut EP: Honey Love. The first song off the EP, 'Feeling Good', was released exclusively as a music video back in November, and is a cover and a tribute to the recently deceased Nina Simone. The EP will also include 4 other songs: the beautiful 'Shoulda Known Better', bluesy “Mountain,” soulful “Take Him from Me”, and a soft and sexy spin on Madonna’s tune “Lucky Star.”
Last night, Honey had her second cameo on the brand new HBO series Looking where she sang her first original release from the EP, 'Shoulda Known Better'. Following the episode, she released the music video for the soon-to-be-hit. Check it out:

Drag Official was lucky enough to speak with Honey about her EP and the inspirations behind it...
Drag Official: When did you initially start working on the album and what was the inspiration behind it?
Honey: "I feel like I've been working on some of this music for years! Well, I guess it's not just a feeling, it's true! It has been a long process. One of the songs on the EP was actually something I started writing over 10 years ago... But I think the last 3 years have really been when I decided to hunker down and start recording. Many of these songs were written before I even auditioned for Drag Race! Getting on the show definitely gave me the kick in the butt I needed to put my work out there. It provided me with a platform to leap off of, so now I'm jumping right in."
Drag Official: 'Honey' and 'Feeling Good' are two very different songs. Which direction is the new EP going to go in?
Honey: "Honey Love as an EP pretty much follows in the footsteps of Feeling Good. In fact, Feeling Good is the first song on the EP. Now, as I've said before, I've been working on a lot of music over the years, and I've written a wide range of material, but for my first EP, I wanted to take a chance and make something personal. There is a lot of heartbreak there, and some sweet moments too. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to that. I mean, who hasn't had their heartbroken at least once? But at the same time, it is a little scary... it's like I'm giving out a little piece of my heart."
Drag Official: Can we expect anything else to accompany the EP?
Honey: "Oh yes! There is a brand new music video that came out on Sunday. It's my most ambitious project yet!" [Honey will also be hosting an official CD release party on Sunday February 23rd 7pm at Martuni’s in San Francisco. The night will include performances of all 5 songs from the EP and more all played with a live band.]
Drag Official: Just for fun, which RuPaul's Drag Race season 6 queen are you rooting for?
Honey: "It's hard to say who my favorite season 6 queen is. I've loved each one I've met. I've been rooting for Courtney Act for a long time though... I've been a fan of hers for YEARS! And I got to know her a little bit during X-Factor auditions. She's definitely sweeter than even maple syrup!"
