Though many fans have never even met Sharon Needles or Alaska Thunderfuck, their breakup, which became official last week, feels very personal. We have all grown to love this "royal couple of drag" through both season 4 and 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race and their continued success after the series. James St James had a post breakup chat with Alaska, in which she discusses how it happened and where she is going in the future. Check out the whole interview below:
James St James: Hey hon. I know this is a trying time, and I would normally respect your privacy (both laugh) but you DID put out a press release, so I’m thinking this is fair game. I think it’s good for you to clear things up, because there’s a big fan interest in you, and we all feel invested, and we wanted to give YOU the option of being in control of the story. So, let’s dive right in. What went wrong?
ALASKA: Well…. Sometimes things don’t work out between two adults.
JSJ: OK. That’s the press release answer. The reeeeeeeal answer is….
A: I think that we both changed, which happens. When you are thrust into the spotlight, like we were, changes happen. We’re just going in different directions.
JSJ: Was it another man?
A: I’ve heard Aaron has moved on. And that’s fine. I have no idea who he’s with though.
JSJ: How did it go down? Was it sudden? Or did you see it coming?
A: It was a series of interactions, that I honestly did not see it coming. He broke up with me. It started when I began a conversation about our relationship, which spiraled into a strange chain of conversations. The first was in a hotel room… well, actually they all happened on the road. Because, honestly, the only time we saw each other was on the road.

A: I don’t know. I would have tried to work it out. When in relationships, even toxic ones, change is hard. I would have stuck it out and died.
JSJ: What are your days like. Walk me through a typical day, post-breakup.
A: Well, I’m 1 month and 6 days sober…
JSJ: OMG! Congratulations! That’s quite an accomplishment!
A: And since I’m not blackout drunk every night, I wake up with the sun. I see friend and coworkers. I think people are realizing that I’m nicer and easier to work with this way. I just got back from Treasure Island Media [the porn company] – I gave them a shoutout in my new “RU GIRL” single – and they tweeted for me to come down and they showered me with gifts.
JSJ: That’s hot. Like what?
A: Funny stuff. X-rated Christmas stuff. I got a Christmas tree ornament that says, “‘Tis the season to be breeding!”
JSJ: So what does the future hold? I hear you might be moving to LA.
A: Yeah, I’m moving to West Hollywood after the New Year, I’m looking at apartments now. I’m moving to LA with my brother Corey (who ALL the Ru girls want to fuck). I just want to focus on my work; it’s the work that’s gotten me thru this tough time. I’m a professional like Shangela, when it comes to work.
JSJ: Are you open to dating?
A: I’m not focusing on finding a new relationship right now, no. I’m basically just getting to know myself because I’m no longer distracted with the constant drinking. But maybe, eventually. Yeah.
A: I don’t know. I would have tried to work it out. When in relationships, even toxic ones, change is hard. I would have stuck it out and died.
